I personally have never ordered one off the menu, their staff is more then willing to make your experience one that you would be happy to share with others so that being said. I feel they would enjoy crafting your drink of choice. Who knows maybe they add it to their menu!
Yes!
There is a pay lot a block or two away.
Email works too.
No dress code. It's a fairly nice place though, I usually wear business casual
They didn't have the night I was there but there is a small stage with a piano. I'm pretty sure I saw a picture with a performer on stage, somewhere in their reviews.
Yes
Hours should be online. There is a very cool private secret room accessible through the phone booth!
I would maybe make arrangements with them ahead of time. Sometimes places/bouncers get worked up over the paper licence. Big difference if they're expecting you vs you walk in on a busy night.
Every second Thursday there is gypsy jazz: Parisota Hot Club. Truly incredible!
Fantastic bar. Great staff, good music, wonderful aura. Would recommend to anyone looking for a laid back environment, and cool characteristics that you won’t find at other bars in the area.
The burgers, chips, and drinks were absolutely fantastic!! The service and ambience were also amazing!
Good drinks and good times
If I had to choose one place to eat for the rest of my life, it might just have to be Volstead's. Each small plate is better than the last, and I'm hard-pressed to think of a better cocktail I've ever had. The staff is so fun, and the ambiance is better than you can imagine.
Volstead's has the best burger I've ever eaten. The place is clearly known for it's speakeasy vibe and great cocktails, but the burger is to die for! The wait staff were attentive, friendly and only there when you needed them. The "She's my..." and the "Sour" cocktails were phenomenal, but that burger, holy Moses it was good.
Loved the atmosphere of this place. I loved everything from the decor to the drinks. It was fun hunting to find the door and even more fun to see the secrets inside!
The concept is cool, and they embrace the speak easy thing. That said, my 'like clockwork' craft cocktail was disappointing. It had bourbon and cognac, but it was too sweet and unbalanced.
What an awesome place to experience and go to! Make reservation, that way you can get a "booth." The theme is a speakeasy and I don't want too say much and spoil anything. Food is great, take a look at the pictures. Reasonably priced, for the most part. Their beer selection is a little smaller, but their drink menu is great.
This place was so fun. An amazing atmosphere and great service. Now let's talk Burgers. I am a connisure of burgers and they had one of the best I've ever had. I literally ate everything off my plate and was just about to eat the stick that was holding the burger together.
Such a great experience. Drinks are balanced so delicately and provide a more classic-bend while mixing in some new era sensibilities. Live music, retro ambiance, and attentive wait staff make this a must for anyone in the area.
This place is amazing! Got to be in the peacock room, food was great and the absinthe louche was very cool.
Really cool speak easy, kind of tough to find, but cool once you get past that. They’ve got a good list of cocktails as well as a food menu. Their pickle plate was yummy; first time I’ve tried a pickled egg. The Home Brew cocktail was the winner of the show. Overall, good atmosphere and ambiance.
I love love loved this bar. A little hidden treasure in uptown. The bartender we had was awesome. The ambiance was perfect and old fashioned feeling like a real speakeasy. By the way, this is the original Volstead's based off of what a bar during prohibition would have looked like. I can't wait to go back and eat there l. Also, the truffle popcorn is amazing!!! I wanted to lick the butter from the bottom of the bowl.
The fun part is to find it!!! Great atmosphere for a double date!! If you have a large group go elsewhere!! There drinks are so worth it!
Really cool spot with the great speakeasy vibe right down to the metal door with the slider to let you in. I'm not sure I will want to stand next to a nasty dumpster that stinks in the heat of the summer to wait to get in, but it wasn't an issue for a winter outing. Inside is a really cool space with lots of little nooks for privacy for 2.
Volsteads is truly a one-of-a-kind experience in uptown. As you descend the stairs, its like you're entering another realm. The drinks are out of this world and the food is dangerously good. Plus, if you've ever wanted to try absinthe, you're in the right place, they have a delightful variety. If you're looking for a beautiful, intimate space, reserve the Peacock Room!
Half of the fun is trying to find it! It's a bit pricey but the environment is really cool. I recommend the Derby Cocktail but beware; the cocktails are strong! You're paying for the experience of authentic foods and drinks from the era. The decor is really cool and the live music was amazing. Very cozy and not too loud. I was a bit surprised when my off menu steak and bruschetta came out cold so as to be authentic. Speaking of; ask what their off menu special of the day is! ;) My friend had the Chicken Provencal which was good, but I found to be a bit salty. Would be difficult to accommodate a large group.
What a great speakeasy experience ! Ambiance that will take you back in history, topped with friendly service and fantastic drinks and food. Worth the experience. Lucky Minneapolis !
Might be the best burger I've ever had. The atmosphere was amazing. The waitress was freaking awesome. She had never seen the movie Blade, but the look on her face when my friend asked where the vampires were was priceless. Totally amazingly freaking completely awesome and a total recommend. This would be a great first date location as it would render other conversation unnecessary. Oh, and the alcohol was STRONG.
Great staff, really friendly and professional. Really good cocktails. 10/10 would visit again
This place is simply amazing! So much fun. Don't really want anybody to know about it. That's how cool this place is. Food was great atmosphere and ambience fabulous! My Love and I had a blast!
Love this speakeasy in Uptown! Cocktails are great, and the food was super tasty as well. Service was also exceptional & I love the intimate atmosphere. Definitely would recommend that you visit - but it may be beneficial to reserve a spot ahead of time to avoid waiting outside in the cold.
This place is amazing. IMO, some of the best cocktails in the city. Going here is an experience. I highly recommend going on a Thursday or Saturday night when they have live jazz. And get a booth. You'll see why.
This is the type of place you only read about or see on TV or movies. Good luck finding it if you don't know someone who knows the location. A highly recommend asking around and figuring it out period from the time you enter to The Secret passage ways to the amazing cocktails great food and great music this is definitely the place you want to go if you want an eclectic old fashioned good time.
Neat spot. Definitely a speakeasy experience with knowledgeable bartenders, delicious drinks, and tasty morsels!
Are the posted hours wrong? My date and I came Monday evening. We found the place. The exterior door was open but all of the inside doors were locked and no answer when we knocked. Maybe this is how it's supposed to be?
We went right when they opened at 5 to see my friend who works there. The asian door guy is a joke, he thinks it's a real speak easy when drinking is still legal. I get they're going for a vibe, but he took it way too far and was rude and aggressive towards us. I have been several times and will not be returning unless that dude gets fired.
Cool place! Fun without being over the top in theme and therefore tacky. Live music was a cool touch and surprise that we hadn't planned on. However, our party of 4 was still able to chat and enjoy each other's company without having to shout. Everyone enjoyed their cocktails and the service was kind, friendly, and efficient!
A hole in the wall with a 70's touch to it. Perfect for date nights. Reservations should be made before and only through email. They have live music on certain days. Food and drinks are reasonably priced.
Great atmosphere and fun to find. There was a little bit of a wait at the door to get in, but that's to be expected on a Friday night. The drinks are expensive, but amazing! The staff is super friendly. Can't wait to go back.
If you have never been here before I'd suggest going ASAP. It's worth the wait even in the cold during winter. You can make a reservation if you think ahead! It cuts the waiting down ALOT! I'd also suggest getting a booth! You can close the Curtain at the table and service will still find you....WINK* Wink* !
One of the coolest speakeasy’s I’ve been to and would definitely come back in the future. Great drinks and staff at the bar area.
Authentic speakeasy environment and vibe. Creative drink choices true to the era. Pretty gal not included ;-)
Awesome speak-easy type of place. Really loved the atmosphere. Wasn't too busy late on a Friday night and the service was top notch. It was my first time, I'd absolutely go back and recommend to friends! Thanks!
What an amazing experience! I felt completely transported back to the 20s. The drinks and food were perfect. I was just waiting for the jazz band and singer to come wandering out to play on the beautiful stage.
Hard to find, but the atmosphere is fantastic
We waited outside for a bit and finally got in. The staff was friendly, and offered great service but the food was absurd. There were tiny portions, and the food was simply overpriced and average. We ordered 4 appetizers for 4 people and after finishing the tiny amounts of food, we all wanted more, not because they were amazing, but because they were absolutely ridiculously tiny. We ordered the mushrooms, stuffed dates, charcuterie, and bruschetta. We were very under impressed. Check this place out for something different, but probably a good idea to plan on eating an actual meal elsewhere.
Hidden place with great flavors and ambient!
The speakeasy rage seems to be in full swing as more and more pop up in every city. Volstead's emporium has two things going for it that I seek out in a speakeasy. Hard to find and a unique space ( underutilized spaces with character). They do a good job, good drinks, dark inside with good service.
Went there for the first time last night. Tough to find, but that is part of the adventure. The staff was very friendly and accommodating. They even gave us a tour and quick history of the place. We didn't eat, but the drinks were outstanding. Will definitely go there again. Favorite drinks, 13th Ward and Bols Royce martini.
The asian door guy thinks hes guarding a treasure hoard when really he's just a gimmick at the door. We went at 5pm right when they opened, there was no one in line and he refused to let us in after we asked him to take his role down a notch after a rude comment he made to our group. Very unfortunate incident and I will not be returning. Mr. Owner I advise you to fire this guy and remind your door staff that customers are a good thing.
Love this speakeasy! My favorite one!I hope y’all are ok this week in uptown Minneapolis.
Wow. Our second of three speakeasies in one night. This was by far the most iconic and interesting, watch for all the hidden doors. They're everywhere you don't expect them to be. Love this place!!!
This is a great hidden gem in the Lyn Lake area. After hearing about it forever I stopped by for my birthday recently. It’s gimmicky for sure but once you’re downstairs the cocktails are great, service is friendly and attentive, and the decor is amazing. I’ll definitely be back soon, and think this would be a fun place to bring visitors!
Come here for top-notch cocktails in a fun environment. We were fortunate enough to get a booth table - I won't spoil the surprise but you will not be disappointed with the service. Food (pasta and flatbread) tasted fresh. We were here for live music that only added to the speakeasy atmosphere. My only complaint would be that I feel two restrooms for the space feels inadequate at times as there was always a line. Bottom line, however, is that this is a fun place and a must-try for a nice night out.
I love a high quality craft cocktail, but while they were tasty there was just almost no alcohol. Unacceptably weak pour on such expensive drinks. There are too many good options in town to bother with that and we won't be back. The no phone number thing is also not cute, but extremely unprofessional as a business.
Great experience! I went here on a double date tonight with a friend. The atmosphere of the speakeasy was a great time for our wives and us. Our waitress was Jenny, and she was fabulous. Her service was great and she was lots of fun.The food was absolutely delicious. My wife got stuffed mushrooms which were cooked to perfection. I got the burger which was extremely tasteful and very juicy. The drinks were delicious as well. I am not sure if the menu changes with the season as this was my first time there. I got the Cuppa Cheer which was sweet with some apple brandy, and went great with my sweet burger.Overall the experience was great and we had a wonderful time.P.S. try to get a booth against the wall if it all possible.
Not worth the hype. Won't be back. The man letting people in was either way too "into character" or just plain rude. Made us wait outside for 10+ minutes in -4 weather and there was nobody ahead of us! Then made my husband who parked our car wait outside for 15+ minutes alone in a back alley. I went to check with the door man who had told my hubby there were people ahead of him (he knew one from our party was still coming), they told me I had to either go back into the seating area or back outside to the cold, but couldn't wait in the stairwell for some reason?? Also....there was nobody waiting in there with them as they had told my husband!!....Many open seats once we got in. Drinks really strong. One plus was the environment inside was unique and the server was gracious. Wouldn't ever recommend.
The bartenders (Cory, Marley, Chris) are an absolute hoot! To boot, they serve very tasty ‘all-night’ snacks and dessert after kitchen close. When the kitchen is open, I highly recommend the Zucchini Carbonara or Burger, they do not disappoint. The decor is beautifully done, and what more, they host occasional live jazz bands! Don’t get cranky if you have to wait in line a while on a Friday or Saturday, it’s a small restaurant! If you don’t want to wait in line, make a reservation or come on a Sunday or Monday. Look for the red light, they’re always open when it’s on. No password, just knock.
This was once a favorite serving the best cocktails and food you could get anywhere. The bar staff really knew their stuff and were damn near excited to come up with something on the spot and talk about tastes and things to try.Sadly all good things end and after an apparent issue between staff and management everybody was gone and the quality went with it.
